Programme Structure

One way of achieving the goals of the concept of "Education for All" is to give equal opportunities in the education system for children with Special Education Needs. In this context, Special Education has become a part of the General Education system. Hence, the teachers need to obtain the required competency levels about the teaching methods related to children with Special Education Needs. A sufficient number of such teacher training programmes to acquire the expected competency is not available in Sri Lanka at present. In addition admission opportunities to attend the existing teacher training courses are restricted. For instance the enrollment for the Diploma in Special Education course conducted by the National Colleges of Education is restricted to 30 students each year. After the completion of this course these teachers are recruited to work only in the government schools system. Generally admission to the teacher training college is limited to in-service teachers. Short term teacher training programmes are also targeted for the government teachers.
